Sesa Football Academy (SFA) began functioning from June 1999 at Virdi, Sanquelim, Goa, on a rehabilitated mine. SFA spots young goan talents in football and nurtures them with appropriate scientific and specific training through the strictly residential academy. Graduating from the Academy requires both academic and sports (football) excellence, which not only produces skilled footballers possessing physical and mental strength but also helps in producing disciplined citizens while pursuing their academic studies. All expenses including those incurred due to the trainee's academic studies are taken care of by the academy. The academy is fully funded by Sesa Goa Limited. Players past/presently in the Indian National team such as Denzil Franco, Rowilson Rodrigues & Mickey Fernandes have graduated from Sesa Football Academy. Presently SFA recruits only Goan boys in the Jr. Academy. Sesa Goa remains focussed on its sole objective to increase the standard of Goan and Indian football.
By virtue of winning the GFA First Div Leaugue in 2007-08, SFA qualified to play in GFA Professional League for the season 2008-09. Sesa decided to start the senior academy in 2008 seeing that their passed out boys were mostly warming the benches of different clubs after they pass out from SFA at the age of 18/19. In the very first year SFA put up a good show by standing in the fourth position after Churchill, Salgaocar and Dempo. The team consists of young players who were graduated from our own Jr Academy and local boys from Goa and five players from other States of India. Average age of our players is 23 years.
SFA have constructed new premises with all facilities for the team and coaches with administration wing, a brand new Football turf, training facilities such gymnasium, Sauna & steam bath, recreation & food including accommodation for players & coaches. The new premises were inaugurated on 14.02.2010. The Sr. Team participates in the Goa Pro-League, various All India tournaments recognized by AIFF & 2nd Division I-league.
